  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Leon G. Higley -- Be Amazed by How Good this Book Is : How Magicians Think... is one of the most engaging magic books I've read this year. Fundamentally, it is a collections of essays, all well written and thoughtful, about magic topics, magicians, and philosophy. There is a certain amount of autobiography as well, which I welcomed. I can't imagine anyone interested in magic not finding something of value here. With books of essays, I often jump in and out of topics, but this was very much a "I can't stop reading" volume. I have long liked Joshua Jay (I briefly met him at a lecture many years ago) for his inventiveness and commitment to broadening magic's reach, but even so, after this book I thing I've underestimated his contributions. I can't wait for his next book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael Bonacci -- Great Book : How Magicians Think is a great idea for a book, thank you Joshua Jay. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Abe Carnow -- Insightful : This is a wonderful book. It contains 52 essays answering common questions about magic. Mr. Jay is not only an esteemed performer, but a brilliant thinker about all matters magical. He also runs a terrific on line magic store. I learned a lot from reading the book. My hobby is magic, and there are tremendous insights found in the book. My favorite insight is the story that Mr. Jay tells about what is written on the crumpled piece of paper that he keeps in his pocket and reads right before he commences a show. This advice, which is found in another chapter, is invaluable and is a piece of advice that I have used throughout my life as a teacher/public speaker. There are also very interesting bits of history including one chapter which tells the story of a woman giving birth to rabbits. I did not know this chapter of history. There are chapters that deal with the famous magicians of today, and the discussion of Mr. Copperfield and Mr. Blaine have many revelations that are likely unknown to most of us. I read the book cover to cover and I suggest you do the same, although many chapters are free standing. What you walk away from after completing the book is that magic is a fantastic art form which can rise to the highest level of enhancing your life. On the base of my computer stand is a rock, with one word painted on it. That word is "wonder". Magic is full of wonder. And Mr. Jay's book helps illuminate the wonder to be found in magic. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sam Lamerson -- This is a fantastic book! : Very rarely does a book come along that can be enjoyed by magicians and non-magicians alike. Even more rare is a book in this genre that is beautiful. This work checks both of these boxes. The beauty comes through in the design, the visuals, and most of all the writing. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Matthew J. Dillon -- Best book on the art of magic I ever read! : I heard Mr. Jay interviewed on a podcast, for magicians, talk about this book. I was excited by his description of the book and IMMEDIATELY ordered it! I was not disappointed (or fooled) in any way by this book. It was a sweet honest look at the art of magic by someone who not only is a leader in the scene of magic but CLEARLY loves the art that he is a part of as a career! That love and respect for his craft is explained throughout the 52 chapters (get it?) with humor, honesty (without exposing anything except one with the permission of the magician), and a clear understanding and RESPECT for the audience who enjoys magic. Whether it's watching a card trick, or one of the great "magical" clocks of Robert-Hodin, or a magician sawing someone in half (he never spoils it..THANK YOU) Joshua Jay explains why some people love the art ... and why some people don't love it! He explains his favorite magicians and why it is getting more difficult to fool him (which, you can feel, saddens him a little). I also LOVE that throughout the book, Joshua does NOT assume that all magicians are men (although there is a lovely chapter about female magicians who should be respected in their own right!) and flips the pronouns of "he" and "she" when describing situations involving magicians. As a fan (one could call me "a magic groupie") I couldn't get enough of this lovely book! It's a fun look at an art that should be respected more in a world that is so quick to open their phones to expose a trick or an illusion (which is also dealt with in a couple chapter on technology and magic in this day and age). THANK YOU for such a wonderful book that looks at MAGIC from the perspective of both the magician, as well as the audience/fans of magic! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
